chili’s with friends ♥

chilis_g5_1

I have the most unpredictable set of friends, they come in different form and sizes and color…hehehe, ano ito t-shirt lang, but seriously they really are spontaneous yet awesome and genuine in many ways. 😛

Ge and wifey came home from London last April without telling anyone of us, tho I had hint of his coming home I didn’t bother asking him anymore until I received his call, “I’m home!” It probably was one of the happiest second, my brother from another mother is back home to native land, and homecoming means get-together and merrymaking even just a night.

We initially set the meeting on May 2 but a day after Ge called me up to tell me that they would be staying short only this time and we need to meet right away, that night in particular. I contacted the group right away to let them know of the changes, happily even with that very, very short notice they all made it except Pel. We miss you Pel and your biblical verses. 😀

The usual, I arrange the venue, I wanted it at Holiday’s Inn Flavor’s Restaurant but George thought it was too much, he remained to be budget-conscious even if he’s not paying a single cent, another of the many best attributes I love about them, and I really appreciate their benevolent concern. Consensually we mutually agreed to meet at Chili’s, not a cheapo as well but I think a few pounds wouldn’t hurt our dear Ge’s pocket anyway.

I arrived past the 7pm meet up and George and Babu were already filling up with some Classic Nachos and beers, it’s a bit boring to see how their nachos look like after an hour of exposure to humid and smoke. Hay! These guys, they can’t proceed without me, I would forever be their planner, their log book, their younger sister who’d do the little errands and so. While Ge would always allow me to do the necessary, even from wayback he gives me go signal even without me asking, he practically can read me. In fact, we’re the best tandem from our pack because we see things communally and because we’re of the same age bracket we follow the same wave length, we jibe in so many ways. But lo and behold I’m that someone who forbade his womanizing and all, I never tolerated his mischievous style kaya lang he knows how to flee from my sight and do the moves. Ge and his darkest secret long ago, I’m happy that the boy already outgrew that stage and he is now a dedicated husband to Den.

Back at Chili’s, I got us Bottomless Tostada Chips, Grilled Shrimp Alfredo Pasta, Fish & Chips, Calamari & Wings Over Buffalo tho we had to return the latter two because it was too salty for our taste, parang nabusan ng asin promise! 😦 And since they have this ongoing promotion –Margarita Madness, I decided to get myself a Frozen Top Shelf Classic Margarita with bottomless refills. It’s love! ♥

Ge and Den arrived and had the Big Mouth Burgers both, I shy away from taking photos of their gigantic burgers but it looks deli and real heavy. Our only Gem arrived late as expected. He loves being late up until now, the limelight of pacing like a VIP, the red carpet, and with everyone’s eyes locked on him. That’s Gem then and now, and I don’t think he’d ever change but we love him just the same.

We had a good chat while dosing ourselves with alcohol and chow, tho things were a lot like more different by now, age must have taken its toll and everyone drank moderately I noticed, even George. But because it’s Monday, we had to adjourn early. After everyone washed down with coffee at the nearby Seattle’s Best we had our goodnights.

chilis_g5_10

Our friendship isn’t perfect, we had our fair share of disagreement, sarcasm and whatnot, we sometimes feel ill about the other person, we sometimes feel dullness but because we have a very solid foundation that no one can break apart, not even the wives and the husbands :D, those imperfections were too small to tell apart. We’d always be there for each other like what we used to 18 years ago, we’d always be each other’s shadow, and no matter how difficult and challenging life can be, we’d rise and conquer the same, we’re born fighters so you know.

Ge and Den, thank you for the wonderful time and hopefully we can spend a longer date in December. I won’t mind guys if you’d surprise us again. 🙂

Apr 27. It was the typical Sunday, I had errands to run while the husband had work the entire day, and as planned we met merely at dinner time to date around before welcoming the nerve-racking workweek. It’s a must that we go out during weekend and spend some time connecting with the real world a.k.a. shopping mall. 😀

sundate no.28_1

But since we still have to squeeze some time, on that particular day, to window shop for that top-sider he had long been yearning for (yes, we didn’t exactly bought it that day) we were able to sit down for dinner late. Most restaurants at the new wing of Glorietta had already pulled their “Closed” signage and we pinned down at least 2 or 3 that were still open. We’ve been passing Don Henrico’s every now and then but never considered it for the longest time because I find it steep for just the two of us and my recall of Don Henrico’s big plates is better for groups. Talk about days when SAM was growing up we used to frequent the old restaurant at Glorietta 4.

Anyhow, because I don’t want to walk any further and I’m famished by now, we settle on. The new store was very casual compared to the old store which was upscale based on my opinion. The new store had this fast food vibes and disorderly setting –mismatched chairs, compact couch seats (that’s very uncomfortable), the flooring wasn’t impressive as well, I should have taken a photo of the whole area tho you can check out here. It’s far different from the old store which was modish yet homey for my taste.

The food was another story. Because it’s late dinner already I thought of skipping the pizza, we had my usual favorite from Don Henrico’s –Onion Rings, Baked Ziti and Buffalo Wings.

sundate no.28_2

Homestyle Onion Rings. Sweet onion rings, lightly breaded and deep-fried until golden crisp; served with our very own ranch dressing.

My memory of Don Henrico’s Onion Rings was that of a basket full of lightly coated and crispy big slices of onion. So naturally I was surprised when our orders came in, more or less 10 pcs of onion rings which was oily and poorly coated (unevenly cut as well). I was dismayed. For its P170 price, it’s a rip-off! 😡

sundate no.28_3

Baked Ziti. Ziti seasoned with sautéed ground beef, Italian sausage, mushrooms, mozzarella cheese and creamy white sauce. Baked until cheese is bubbly and garnished with red sauce. P310 To Share.

There might be a reason behind this unappetizing serving of pasta and I can only assume that the cook was in a rush because it’s nearly closing or was it me and my current obsession to red sauce and olive oil. I thought I was in the rival restaurant for a while.

sundate no.28_4

Don Henrico’s Buffalo Wings. Traditional upstate New York style tender pieces of chicken wings marinated, cooked to perfection and coated with tangy BBQ sauce; served with their creamy ranch dipping sauce. P390 for 3 pieces.

Probably because I’m by now upset I didn’t pay heed anymore to our Buffalo Wings order. I cannot tell exactly if it tasted the same. I wasn’t interested anymore. 😦

sundate no.28_5

I ♥ Don Henrico’s because it brings so many memories of the past esp its Session Road’s branch other than this recent dining experience didn’t impress me and left my palate in despair. What have you become now DH? Where’s that promise of great food and great ambiance go?

A Saturdate. I had a quite fulfilling, tiring day yesterday but I’m no way complaining despite Manila’s very hot climate, despite the scarcity of fund to splurge and shop, despite the aching toes from window shopping. It’s the day of the week I always look forward to aside from Sunday. It’s the day I could care less of all the issues I have in my bag. And it’s a day I can snatched my husband from his pestering routine. 😦

Like most weekend I have plans for us but most of the time those plans but becomes the next weekend plan and so on and so forth until we really find time. You know how I’d love to wake up on weekends before and indulged to some breakfast plate, I love it when most people are out early, savoring their hot cup of coffee while reading the papers and chitchatting with family. I love it when the sun is up and kissing me gently. ♥ But because we tend to go out more often on Fridays this time (he’s mostly off on a Saturday so it’s permissible even if we stay late, very late on Friday nights) we’re more likely to extend sleeps on Saturday mornings and get up late for breakfast, it doesn’t took any advantage for me that there are a lot of restaurants these days offering all-day breakfast, still I want to eat my breakfast at around 7-8am, the best time for pancakes and omelets, ham and bacon, corned beef and spam, dried fish and hotdogs, coffee and oj, and cheese and butter, hmmm…I’d die with the smell of breakfast alone!

Other than we missed breakfast again yesterday, and it was past lunch already when we arrived at the mall. I have nothing so specific in my list for lunch tho I’d easily discarded the husband’s penchant to eat Chinese-y. I’m not in the mood for dimsum and chili flakes and noodles, I’m not in the mood to eat rice either, so we’d happily found ourselves settled at this not so cheap bistro. That normally happens when we’re not decided for anything it’s either we end up in turo-turo or in a fancy restaurant that we feel like.

5apr2014_2

Italiannis isn’t our run of the mill restaurant; sometimes we need to wait for a special occasion to come by to excuse its pricey pasta and pizza. But yesterday was like a form of reward, I had a pretty good week or probably it’s what I’d like to believe. 🙂 Seriously, I think I’ve said what I needed to say, I think I made myself very clear, and I was able to listen in as well. And for that, I’m not so guilty to eat to my heart’s content.

5apr2014_3

*this was the second serving, tuscan bread

To start we had complimentary home-baked Foccacia bread which we dipped in olive oil and aged vinegar, and because we were famished already we had a second serving of Tuscan bread this time.

I would have wanted to eat a refreshing healthy salad but calculating my resources I can make my very own feast at home, so we skipped and rather picked the pasta of our choice.

5apr2014_4

Shrimp Fra Diablo. Fettuccini sautéed with shrimps, garlic, spinach, asparagus and feta cheese in tomato cream sauce. It’s a default for us that we order our pasta with seafood, we loved it especially the generous serving of shrimps.

5apr2014_5

We’re a bit thorn between Truffle Mushroom and Quattro Staggioni pizza, I love the latter because its four flavored already however the former won because of the black truffle cream and prosciutto which were both very foreign to me.

5apr2014_6

The dough which we both love had some bite and chew; I can attest that it’s freshly made.

By 3pm we’re done, satiated and all, I couldn’t afford to have dessert unless it’ll be given free. Hehehe. Italianni’s once again impressed me with another great experience –good food and service was evenly superb! Burp!

5apr2014_7

Husband and I split ways after, he was running some errand without me so I was left in the big mall. But sometimes I love it that we have our alone time, and I guess it’s another secret to a happy marriage, me-time! 😀 Tho the downside of it I always end up with the luxury side of self-nurturing, and retail therapy becomes a necessity. Hahaha. I went to window shop but eventually end up with a loot from Forever 21.

5apr2014_8

By the way, for the first time I was able to try Illy Café Delizio at the Ground Level of National Bookstore, I thought it was the perfect break from the sweltering summer heat plus I need a good place to sit down, a bit remote from the clatter of mall ambiance.

5apr2014_9

I had Iced Mocha, it was steep at P181.50 and I swear to myself that I’m not going back there for coffee or frappe, its way over my budget. I’d probably go back for the Tiramisu alone.

Before dinner time the husband and I met up once again, we had a quick round at Rustan’s Supermarket and bought our weekly supply –forest ham, cheddar cheese, paper towels, chips and fruits. It’s a must that we have a good stock of fruits at home because that aids me from digestive disorders, the limitation of being old and out of shape.

5apr2014_10

5apr2014_16

And because I’m maximizing our couple time, we made a trip at Cucina Andare’s new location. I wanted a carefree dinner and The Link’s roof deck was perfect for Manila’s very warm climate now, it’s windy up there. Other than the food market need more ads to continue its operation. Unlike at its old location, it’s in plain sight and people who are just passing by would normally stop and peek around. I noticed that there’s not even a tarp at the entrance of the Link, and the visible signage so far was placed no more than at Level 7 of the parking area. I suggest that they put a classified at the elevators so people would see it right away. 🙂

5apr2014_11

5apr2014_12

Anyhow back at Cucina Andare, the choices were a bit limited now, but we happily settled with one of our favorites –baby back ribs! Cheap at P120 only with a kind serving of rice already.

5apr2014_13

5apr2014_14

We got another order of Cajun Pork Chops with mashed potato at P130 only, everything was so dirt cheap and that gave me no guilt to splurge on sweets, all from Cakes by K.

5apr2014_15

We stayed late because my BIL made a call, he was pretty enjoying the video calling thru facetime and we thought our signal would slow down if we move out right away.

5apr2014_17

My Saturday was far from being dull, it’s a day out I’d love to go over again, it’s just right that we spent time together and it’s rational that we enjoy what we earn. Tomorrow is the start of another workweek and I’m more than ready to face all the challenges coming my way, after all I believe everything has its own resolution, I’m confident you know. 🙂

Jan 12. After venturing into some small-time businesses with colleagues the husband is now back to an 8-hour job, tho still pretending to be active and profiting on his sideline a.k.a glass installing business he’s now busy doing government transactions with this well-known Parisian chain that recently opened in Power Plant Mall last December. I have no qualms of him going back to a regular job, only which his 6-day in a week sched pissed me off. 😦 Imagine that I can only have him on Sundays or Saturdays in some weeks, I’ll soon break down because I’m used to having him around the whole weekend.

Anyhow, before our birthday week I snatched a day out with him at the mall because I needed some good feel, I felt I needed a break , some time off for myself and him, and some retail therapy of sort. Hehehe. Since he had some errand to attend earlier that day, I went ahead of him at the mall and had some me-time at David’s. Fortunately my stylist was there and I was able to get that much needed cut and blow. You see my hair is a mess after my last haircut back in September or October, my rebond session was also due but I keep on delaying it because I was waiting for some good promo to come in. Life of an ordinary worker sucks! After David’s, the husband and I met for some mid-afternoon snack at one of our favorite café.

cafe france_4

Café France remains to be one of my places-to-go whenever I crave for pasta and sandwiches, I love their canapés too and their coffee buns and ensaymadas. That afternoon I did not pass in ordering my favorite pasta dish, Café France Seafood Marina is simply one of the best because of its generous serving and affordable price compared to other bistro that offers pretty the same plate.

cafe france_2

Seafood Marinara –sautéed shrimp and fish, simmered in rich and flavorful marinara sauce tossed with linguine noodles.

cafe france_3

The husband tends to eat healthier at times so he got the Shrimp Pesto, not as appetizing as I expected it to be.

debenhams_2014

But all in all we enjoyed our meal because we didn’t go over the budget, which means I have more than enough for my shopping spree, hey it was my birthday week so I was more than entitled to shop and because it’s already the sale month I wasn’t so guilty with my loot. Thank God for my loyalty card I even got an additional 10% off from my purchases. I got some really good pieces again this year and the husband enjoyed his fair share –Mantaray, St. George, Red Herring…ikaw na ‘ney ang Debenhams’ fan. You can now go on hating Forever 21 for their mass-produced cheap basics. 😀
