Because work yesterday was not pouring I went my way to blog hop into my favorite sites and I stumbled upon Ilocos Empanada –one of my favorites when travelling to Ilocos region. I had my first taste of it during my first road trip to the Northern Province way back in 2004 and we had it at Plaza Burgos in Vigan. Since then, every time we would pass by Vigan I would ask husband to make a stopover at those makeshift tents that make, cook and sell these empanadas. When in Laoag, you can get these empanadas too across the plaza. 🙂 So much of my recollection about road tripping in Ilocos as I dearly missed those days and looking forward to do it again, kelan ba ‘ney?
Anyway, glad that this Ilocos signature is finally here in Manila and lucky me because it is very nearby our place. 😀
I requested husband to check it last night following my craving at those yummy pictures online and he went home with 3 pieces of the special empanada. Yehey! While munching, husband continued to tell me that these empanadas are transported directly from Ilocos. Well, probably they mean the longganisa, the dough (?), the procedure and probably the folks who prepare it.
Special Ilocos Empanada is made of rice flour for the crust, Ilocos longganisa, egg, mongo sprout and grated green papaya and best eaten with Ilocos vinegar (Sukang Iloco). They use achuete to make it orange-colored. I love its rich filling though I prefer the thinner and crunchier crust of Vigan empanadas.
Well, since the Mandaluyong branch is just beside Aling Banang (which we also frequent during dinner), Fariñas Ilocos Empanda would be a regular fare too.
